It was late March in 1977 and I had recently begun my investigation of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. James Earl Ray had already told me his story of how he was forced into a ‘kind of’ guilty plea and then was sentenced to 99 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. I was driving and just about to pull into the driveway at Jack and Mary-Noel Kershaw’s house on Doge Place in Nashville, Tennessee.
