Also known as Release Me: And Let Me Love Again
The song was written by Eddie (Piano) Miller and Robert Yount. It just so happened that they wrote it in 1949 which is also the year of my birth.
A few years after it was written it was recorded by by Jimmy Heap & the Melody Masters (in 1953), and with even better success by Patti Page (1954), Ray Price (1954), and Kitty Wells (1954). Jivin’ Gene [Bourgeois] & the Jokers recorded the tune in 1960, and that version served as an inspiration for Little Esther Phillips, who reached number one on the R&B chart and number eight on the pop chart with her big-selling cover. The Everly Brothers followed in 1963, along with Lucille Starr including a translation in French (1964), Jerry Wallace (1966), Dean Martin (1967), Engelbert Humperdinck (1967) who was number one on the UK Singles Chart and many others in the years after including this one by me, Gary Revel.
Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Release Me” was the highest selling single in 1967 in the UK at 1.38 million copies. It reached the number one slot on the chart in the UK and stayed there for six weeks during March and April 1967.
The Dean Martin and Engelbert Humperdinck recordings of the song brought it to the pop music scene and found its way on many pop radio playlists throughout the world.
Here is my cover of the song. I do it as a simple guitar/vocal production. I hope you like it. I know it is a great song and although I also know I can’t do it as well as Dean Martin or Engelbert I can’t help but give it a try anyway.
